Los Angeles, California-based artist Derek Simpson is a man who wears many hats. Gifted with the guitar and piano and the ability to craft emotive soundscapes by drawing inspiration from his memories and life experiences, Simpson brings a refreshing take on life imitating art, or is it the other way round? His new record "222" dives into the story of an individual whose unconditional love for his partner leads him into unexpected places as both parties bask in the warmth of their embrace. Nothing seems to go wrong for the two love birds as their spirits are in sync. The self-produced track is reminiscent of the late 90s contemporary pop with a unique twist with Derek's breathy vocals and irreverent lyrics like
"So if you wanna come on over…
What’s your ETA? Don’t say,
We’re always like 20 minutes late anyway
Puttin’ on your face, you slay
How you gonna look this rude on a Tuesday?"
The music video is shot from Simpson's point of view in a DIY home video style with camcorder effects that give viewers a sense of nostalgia and innocence. We follow Derek and his love interest as they traverse the city, absorbing each moment and experience with every fibre of their being. The use of fast cuts, unbalanced shots, and grainy aesthetics adds urgency, and the progressive story between the duo is anchored on their growing fondness for each other. The end part is my favourite when we see her trying out a replica of Freddy Krueger's razor gloves for no reason.
“222” is the second single off of Derek's upcoming third full-length album, Somehow, available via Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.
