New Jersey-hailing singer-songwriter Renee Maskin shares cinematic visuals for heavy yet ethereal production “Scrimshaw,” rooted in her trademark blend of indie-folk with country and experimental touches.
Shot in and around Joshua Treeover the course of 2022 and 2023, the stunning music video makes for the perfect backdrop for the themes of loss, and death, and moving on discussed in the poignant anthem.
Known for her ability to balance classic styles with a distinct offbeat infusion, the atmospheric track is elevated by an intricate play between a sense of uneasiness and a lush beauty in the music video.
With the track being an alluring glimpse of her upcoming album Shimmer, which is set to be most self-assured and confident release to date, framed by melodic sweetness, grit and vivid imagery in equal amounts.
Speaking on the album, Maskin says, "Most of the songs on Shimmer were written this year, and written very quickly, with the bulk of it hashed out over the summer. It’s a beachier record than I might have intended, but I live in a shore town so it’s not totally out of line with who I am. I listen to a lot of David Bowie and was really honing in on how he did harmonies on his records. Of course, I don’t sound anything like David Bowie. But I was trying to figure out how to use my voice as much as possible this time around. To layer things, and to not be fearful of it feeling a little strange or even silly. I think with Shimmer I made some strides in the soup. I’m getting closer to the goal."
Having carved a niche for herself with a deceptively simple but delicate musicality swirling with vibrance and vulnerability, Renee Maskin’s newest offering leaves us wanting more of her imaginative yet heartfelt sonic messages.
