Toy Car make an electrifying return with "Rat Race" after Isle of Wight triumph

Fresh off an electrifying performance at the 2023 Isle of Wight Festival, Liverpool's own Alternative-Indie/Post-Punk-Rock outfit, Toy Car, are back in the spotlight with their latest offering, "Rat Race." This fiery track, the first installment of a two-part release, unveils the band's more explosive, rock-infused side.

"Rat Race" is a bold statement of intent for the year ahead. The song represents some of their most immediate and impactful work to date. With a solid backbone of tight drums, a wall of overdriven guitar lines, and a groove-laden bass, Toy Car crafts a soundscape that's both irresistible and raucous, offering a riveting listening experience. The finishing touch is the urgent, half-spoken, half-sung vocals, which bring forth the post-punk undertones and unmistakable 90s Brit-pop influences that define the track.

When asked about the inspiration behind the track, the band shared their insights:

"A phrase I had when writing this track was 'to be a perfect citizen.' It has themes of the system and society as a whole but doesn't exactly blame anyone, only observes modern life. The structure of the track is straightforward, with the verses delivering the punch and the instrumental parts releasing the tension with a breakdown towards the end. I felt this added a town crier effect, further reinforced by the harmonics during the instrumental parts. Both tracks were recorded simultaneously at Bam Bam, a Leeds-based studio, with 'Debaser' by the Pixies as the initial reference song. I wanted the song to exude life and get people grooving at our shows."

In 'Rat Race,' Toy Car presents a sound that feels remarkably complete for a band still in its relative infancy. This new single is a testament to their artistic growth and potential, positioning them as a band to watch closely in the coming months. As they continue to captivate audiences with their electrifying performances and authentic musicality, Toy Car is undeniably revving up for a thrilling journey ahead.
