Maya Malkin explores healing from an abusive relationship on 'Congratulations'

Toronto pop act Maya Malkin delivers luscious and vibrant five-track album Congratulations, led by joyous instrumentals offset by vulnerable lyricism that sees her explore feelings of strength and healing, having come out of an abusive relationship.

Opening with glossy and anthemic alt-pop stylings of “Honey,” a light-hearted number encapsulating the calm before storm, evoking a feel-good vibe with a hints of the darkness that lies ahead. The positive feel of “Honey,” gives away to the moody melodies of “Seriously?” showcasing her husky vocal lines laid over soft but impactful beats.

“Hypocrites,” is yet another slice of hazy alt-pop with quiet sonics framed by her soaring and strong voice that stretches into the catchy groove of “Hostage,” before closing off with the emotional ebbs and flows of title track “Congratulations,” that fully exposes the darkness of a possessive lover.

Brilliantly sweeping from the enchanting highs to brittle lows of a painful love life, Malkin manages to weave a rich production framed by soothing soundscapes, gentle vocals and brutally honest song writing.

An artist who never holds anything back in her purpose-laden pop music, this rising star is a force to be reckoned with on each new offering.
