Formerly of Kansas, the now Los Angeles-based artist Tommy Newport has just unveiled his new ten-track album, Glasshead. While the album certainly stays true to Newport’s acclaimed and lovable unique sound, the release also marks significant growth for the artist, showcasing some of his strongest work to date. The concept behind this album is Newport revealing his most honest version of himself, quite simply letting listeners take a glimpse into his “glasshead.”
Newport shares, “When I make music, I feel my head is made of glass and when I share my music, my thoughts are visible to everyone else. The project bounces around from different genres but stays true to my sound.”
From the sweet and delicate “Nectar” which almost sounds like a lullaby, to the gritty “Calabasas” which is reminiscent of an old Western film, Newport covers a lot of ground in this album. “Jackpot” injects the release with some energy, featuring Canadian rap artist Jazz Cartier, showing Newport venturing towards new genres. “Zulta” is a big, bold, show-stopper of a track, as its almost orchestral arrangements take you on a sonic journey.
If there is anything we have learned from Newport over the years, it’s to never be surprised. Always full of twists and turns, Glasshead is the perfect demonstration of Newport’s colorful and wonderful musical mind.
