For an artist of substance like Joya Mooi, combining powerful storytelling with next-level R&B is second nature.  "Roselle," is yet another metaphorical feather in the cap for Mooi, a sweeping ode to contemporary R&B that is equally a journey through her own diverse upbringing.

"Roselle," is a meditation on a diasporic youth.  Growing up in the Netherlands while reflecting on her South African roots, Mooi explores patterns of identity and spirituality through a complex yet relatable lens.

Speaking on the track, Mooi expresses, "'Roselle' is inspired by the roselle hibiscus flower – a celebration of cross-continental traditions, despite their painful origin. One plant is part of the botanical legacy that connects the African Diaspora with the transatlantic slave trade. I think there’s something magical and interesting about these traditions that exist over 400 years, stemming from a horrendous past."

Despite lofty and deeply moving subject matter, "Roselle" is at its core, a thoroughly enjoyable and listenable track.  A testament to her ability to build complex and emotive themes within accessible listening gems, Mooi's upcoming project (dropping September 30) is sure to provide more of the same for gifted songstress.
