Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Deb Fan carries with her the unique and highly sought after skill of being unapologetically comfortable to be herself. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Fan wasn't exposed to popular American music until she was a teenager, by then already a classically trained pianist and jazz trumpeter. Taking inspiration from both her traditional Chinese upbringing as well as her relatively newfound affinity for American alternative R&B classics, "Limbo" is the best of both worlds as it mixes new and old sentiments to profound effect.
Taking inspiration from Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote, as well as SZA, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill, Fan's wispy alternative R&B stylings are a breath of fresh air in the up-and-coming, DIY indie space. It's a jazz-infused, almost improvisational sound that is nigh impossible to recreate unless one possesses a special blend of sonic chemistry and a highly diverse musical background. Fan, obviously, has both and creates a distinct allure on the track that you won't hear from most underground artists.
Currently studying sound design and music production, Fan's classical training is clearly apparent with extremely delicate sound choices and a pristine mix. Exhibiting the rare quality of confidently pure creative experimentation, it seems like there is no lane from here that Fan should be afraid to take her music.
