Recently relocated Angelino Harrison Lipton has had a knack for writing tightly wrapped and precise left-of-center pop ballads for several years now. His sometimes calm, sometimes confoundingly technical instrumentals are almost all him; guitar, bass, and synths are all the handiwork of Lipton's tedious trial and error to find that perfect fit of indie-pop goodness. His latest EP Strawberryys is a celebration of his songwriting and producing expertise, packaging together some gems from the past year with a few never-before-heard new gems.
Fascinated with the synth sound and textures of the '80s, Strawberryys is a smorgasbord of vintage synth-wave married with modern radio-friendly, soft pop vocals. The newest and most profoundly touching track from the project is "19 Hours", a remake of a previous collaboration with noted electronic producer Giraffage. It's boppy and elevated, not to mention supremely well-orchestrated. Another testament to Lipton's exemplary songwriting is "No Good at Goodbyes" and perhaps even more so, its stripped version featuring a breathtaking Lipton falsetto that may as well steal the entire show on the project. Recorded on Instagram live in one take, the track showcases the incredible emotion of which Lipton is capable of exuding on a record. The titular track, "Strawberryys," featuring fellow indie artist Alex Siegel, is a tonally sound and hummable slice of life bop that encapsulates the synth-y wonderland of the whole project.
Bridging the gap between artist and instrumentalist, Lipton's delicate care in crafting silky ballads over lushly produced soundscapes is at the forefront on this project. It's hard to ignore the polish on every song, as they all sound radio-ready with a carefully vintage-yet-fresh aesthetic. Keep an eye on Lipton to continue to deliver sweetly fresh gems in 2022 and on.
