Carl Finlow sets a dystopian tone in latest EP "Engines of Creation"

UK legend Carl Finlow makes his full debut on Avoidant Records with four high-octane electro cuts. First joining the label to contribute a track to the Defend Your Planet compilation, Finlow returns with the Engines Of Creation EP. With an impressive discography spanning 20 years and numerous genres, his latest creation returns to what he does best; straight up machine funk.

Title track “Engines Of Creation” sets the tone with unrelenting breaks, futuristic synths and heavily robotic moments. Completely true to the sound we have come to know and love from Finlow, “Engines Of Creation” could be from 2031 and we wouldn’t dispute it. The ability to give something so robotic so much funk is second to none — it’s tracks like these that make for future classics. “Dead Centre” ups the tempo without losing any of the class, offering clattering percussion and moody synth work to create an intense atmosphere. Eerie elements carve out a dystopian soundscape, with things growing more and more ominous as the track unfolds. Undoubtably one for when things are starting to get a bit scatty, it’s a track that’s going to tear-up low capacity basements.

“Sonic Six” strips things back, layering meandering breaks with warped bass and spooky synths to create a track destined for the after hours. Hypnotic and alluring, it’s as much a track for the dance floor as it is for electro fans to chill to; it’s a track to get lost in, wherever you may be. Closing things out is “Reckless,” a seven minute exploration of the cosmic realms of electro. Filled with somewhat frantic moments, urgent energy and mind-boggling noises, “Reckless” is exactly what it says on the tin. Winding things down with an immense amount of energy, there’s a reason Carl Finlow is one of the UK’s most respected producers.

Engines Of Creation can be streamed and purchased via Bandcamp.
