Drawing upon the landmark funk and soul of legends like Marvin Gaye and Brandy, LA-based by way of PG county, Maryland singer Reggie Becton gives his modern twist on soul classics in his new track "Issues", the first single off forthcoming album California.
"Issues" is everything that is right with modern soul these days; brilliantly layered production with drippy synths and a ghostly echoing background sample paired with the unflappable confidence of its charismatic lyrical maestro. Taking inspiration from Musiq Soulchild, Becton's suave demeanor and signature orange beanie are two trademarks that help define his familiar-yet-fresh stylings. Becton related on the story behind the single, "Throughout college, I was in a situationship with a girl I met in high school, and from the inception of our relationship we were always having ‘issues.’ Through the years we would always reconnect but go nowhere. The final collision in our traffic came the night before I moved to LA. At that time, I think I was in such a fragile state due to preparing for this big move, not knowing how things would turn out, leaving family and friends behind, that's when she didn’t come to see me, I was hurt.” Becton's broken heart is the listener's best friend as his passion-soaked vocals emanate directly from the heart and manage to actually touch the soul.
Becton's full-length debut album California is set to release later this year; a project centered around his move to California from Maryland and the 'situationship' he left behind. With "Issues" being his first release since 2020's delightful Thank You For Listenin' EP, fans should be ecstatic to hear more modern-soul classics coming from the Maryland native in the near future.
