Toya Delazy's "Resurrection" is a return to form [Video]

London-based, South African artist Toya Delazy channels her South African roots on her new entrancing single titled "Resurrection."  As the title suggests, Delazy goes back to the essence of her true being in this post lockdown world with the help of up and coming South African producer Mxshi Mo with assistance from Ahadadream, and Sam Interface. Bolstered by the frenzied trippy backdrop ripe with distorted techno synths, rousing African grooves, Delazy comes through with a fiery performance. She stays true to herself and delivers all the lines in Zulu to give listeners that authentic African vibe dripped in experimental hip-hop aesthetics. In a nutshell, it's a sonic rebirth for the emerging MC and singer.

The visual really peels back with a lot of layers, ranging from the multi-faceted aesthetics, set pieces, and motifs. The fast-cut scenes play a huge role in keeping up with the energy of the track while the expressive choreography and edgy costumes add to the visual dressing. I love how they switch between VHS-styled grainy effects to HD and the seamless transitions between scenes that may not seem connected at first glance. This is definitely not the typical or average music video so kudos to the director Kyle Lewis for seeing and understanding Delazy's vision and helping her bring it to life. "Resurrection” is the first offering from her forthcoming EP Afrorave Vol. 1 out 18th June.
