MEI continues to establish her musical voice, and we are all better off for it. The South London vocalist, bassist, and producer has never been one to avoid getting personal in her music, but her latest single “See Us” is perhaps her most urgent to date. Written in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, the new single acts as a call to Black women to demand to be seen as they are. With genre-bending production from the duo A Good Friend and an accompanying video filmed during lockdown, “See Us” demonstrates MEI’s resilient spirit with a message that is both salient and timeless.

While there is plenty for listener’s to absorb on “See Us,” MEI’s gliding vocal delivery remains at the forefront of the mix throughout. Her knack for unique, catchy melodies is on full display in the hooks with angular lines for the words, “They don’t see us / we gon’ make them see us.” As an added bonus, the song also features a brief coda with a change in style to more hard-hitting production and rap-style vocal delivery. As part of a new EP on the way later this summer, “See Us” offers a tantalizing preview of MEI’s latest musical direction.

"See Us" is available to stream or download here.
