Songstress MEARA is no stranger to creating moving film tracks. Now taking her music career into her magical palms, MEARA is ready to share her own dark and light with the world. She shares, “I’ve always sung other people’s music yet dreamed of writing my own. I wanted to step out of that box. I want to inspire people to discover their own story and pursue their dreams. Our journeys are never a straight line.”
Her new single “Blackbird” is the first of a set of releases leading up to her album. The otherworldly tune tells a tale of awakening, reconnection and embracing the dark like a long-lost friend. The baroque-pop meets folk song has layers of strings and booming drums that take you on a futuristic sonic journey. However, the new video is set in a more historic vibe, taking audiences into unknown territory.
The video is undeniably haunting and mystical. Set in a medieval looking castle, it has an array of atmospheric shots showing a delayed effect on the movements and creating an eerie sense of ghostly activity. MEARA is adorned in a gorgeous white dress giving a clear cut contrast to the light and dark of life and to the blackbird herself. The blackbird is portrayed through a contemporary female dancer slowly luring MEARA in before finally interacting with each other amongst the kaleidoscopic shots. The dancer shows beautiful extensions of her body and balletic moves with black feathers dancing around the whole video. There is so much to submerge yourself into, with constant twists and turns to the storyline it is unfathomably engaging. MEARA’s facial expressions and acting is dedicated and affecting. A very complex, beautiful video showcasing the songs ability to create tension.
For a debut single, this British/American artist is setting a precedent for future releases and we can wait for the next chapter.
