Andreww's "Medusa" looks back on rockier relationships [Video]

Closing out 2020 with his debut single, German-born London-based artist Andreww left a truly lasting impression with his distinctly grungier take on the current wave of artists syphoning flavours of rock and pop through hip-hop sensibilities.

With the self-reflective "Talking to Myself" not long in the rearview mirror, his sophomore single "Medusa" careers down the same sonic path, establishing his creative identity through his wildly melodious and heady coalescence of grunge, hip hop and the darker tints of pop.

Drawing from the same palette yet telling a different story in both energy and lyricism, "Medusa" shifts the focus from himself to soured romance. He elucidates in an email statement, "As much as people didn’t want to look at Medusa they still did. It’s the same with toxic relationships. No matter how bad they are for you, you can’t help but stay in them. ‘Medusa’ is about these toxic relationships and all the two-faced feelings that come with them."

The chest-knocking, trap-leaning beat provides a steady backbone to the track that hooks you in from the start and evolves to embellish the otherwise murky guitars with an intoxicating bite. He continues in the same statement, "The inner conflict also reflects in the music; clashing trap, grunge and pop against each other kind of shows that things that sometimes aren’t meant to together, still end up staying together." The inner conflict is further perpetuated by the accompanying visual that sees an emotionally-wrought Andreww sequestered introspectively in a room, a potential metaphorical extension of his mind.

Despite a mere two singles under his belt thus far, Andreww is rapidly becoming one of the most compelling new voices in the current alternative space.

"Medusa" is available now via Misled Records.
