South-African born songwriter-producer Julia Church has dropped soulful new single “Marionette." Continuing to establish her ability to effortlessly blend and transcend genres, Church’s latest single is a heavenly fusion of pop, jazz and soul. Soaked in an atmospheric soundscape, pierced perfectly by her husky yet bold vocals, it boasts a sonic style that’s as sombre and grounding as it is breezy, feather-light. On “Marionette,” Church is at her most honest and personable.

Coming in with a laid-back vibe and holding listeners rapt with its earworm melody and killer chorus, the track is a finely put together slice of pop-soul heaven and is a clear indication that Church is steadily on the rise as an artist even as her music stays earthy, raw and relatable.

Drawing from influences of Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Nora Jones etc, Church who is originally from Durban, South Africa, took the brave step of moving halfway across the world, relocating to London in order to discover and pursue her dreams of making music.

From early recognition for her features – particularly on successful, highly-streamed dance tracks Tez Cadey’s “Walls,” and Mozambo & Basic Tape’s “Bright Side,” etc- to moving to the UK to study music production at age 18, Church’s single-minded focus and passion to hone her musical creativity has led to forging her way as a multi-talented artist.

“Marionette,” which comes on the back of two successful EPs – 2019’s Take What You Want, Do As You Please and 2020’s To Have, Not Just To Hold – and a sold-out debut headline show in London, is a culmination of Church’s efforts to further hone her craft.

With an authentic sound that comes straight from her heart while still remaining true to the music that touched her as a child, Church is an up-and-comer to keep your eye on.
