With the new wave of lo-fi hip-hop setting a relaxed soundtrack across the world, there are not many artists that do it quite as rapturously as Austin, Texas-based artist dj poolboi. Typically known for his potently atmospheric lo-fi house, his talents, and aural aesthetics naturally overflowed from that secular direction, into crafting his own distinct flavour described in his own words as "emo house / blu-wave / music for the bike ride home in the dark," or in other cases, simply his own aperture on EDM, "electronic depression music."
His 2020 project it's good to hear your voice spends the latter half exploring this subtle deviation, with "don't be so hard on yourself" and accompanying visual an irresistible standout.
Centred around one pensively evolving piano passage, an enveloping ambience builds around the lachrymose melodies, embellished by distant and bright harmonies that add a sense of hope to an otherwise wholly melancholic affair. As the production fleshes out the track, the more it engulfs your consciousness and the more transformative it becomes. The accompanying visual further compounds this emphatic quality, adding a romantic, rose-tinted hue to the humdrum and normalcy of everyday life.
In times such as these, you shouldn't "be so hard on yourself;" take moment to slow down, and dj poolboi has with this, the perfect soundtrack to collect yourself.
