Berlin-based label Nerang Recordings has returned with another impressive VA compilation, Freaky Friends Volume 1. Founded by Australian DJ and producer Whipr Snipr, with a focus on acid, house, breaks and electro, Nerang’s newest instalment invites six quality artists to produce one quality EP.
E-Missions founder, P.Leone kicks things off with “Parting Currents.” Though an upbeat, rolling bassline points the track in the direction of the club, subtle breaks and a euphoric piano melody make this one a summery banger. Perfect for an uplifting moment on the dancefloor, or just to listen to chilling, “Parting Currents” has an enormous amount of range. Nasty King Kurl’s “Lawless” takes things in a completely different direction. Blending electro breaks and bass with rap and R&B, “Lawless” brings something wholly refreshing to the table; if there was ever a killer crossover, it’s electro and rap — if you know, you know.
Things quickly begin to heat up with Ole Mic Odd’s “Hydro Anthem.” Indistinguishable choppy vocals, relentless acid tinged bass and heavily percussive moments make “Hydro Anthem” just that; a ghetto house anthem and undeniable dancefloor weapon. Sentient State steps up next with “4 Tha Freaks.” Offering a moments peace, Sentient State explores his softer side with mellowed out lyrics and elated chords. Another huge addition to the summer playlist.
After a brief relaxation, DJ Swagger chucks us straight back in at the deep end with the Chicago House inspired “The Phone Talky.” A bouncing, speedy bassline breaks into sultry melodies and seductive vocals, giving the bassline’s return even more of a kick; an incredibly fun track, this could easily be a stand out if it wasn’t followed by such an impressive track. Main Phase closes out the compilation with “Get Higher,” a gleeful cut of ravey UKG. Thudding kicks, wobbly bass and oldskool vocals make this an incredibly fun, high-energy stand out on the release. Could possibly be the sound of the summer — and the perfect way to close things off.
