The dynamic house DJ and Producer, Justin Jay, Steps into the techno world with his new EP Marathon. This new release displays a Justin Jay that fans have not heard before. The four-track release debuts on Ovum Recordings, the Pennsylvania based Techno label founded by Josh Wink and King Brit.
Kicking off the EP, "Vale of Tempe" packs a serious a punch. The track boasts a rather industrial sound with some heavy-hitting claps and thumping low ends. This song quickly eases listeners into what's to come later in the EP. The track's title was inspired by the journey he was on while producing it. The release was made in a single car ride as he was traveling between Los Angeles and Temple while on tour hence the title.
Second up on the release, "Marathon" pumps the tempo as Justin take a high energy approach with this one. This 140 bpm club tool pulls inspiration from "Phylyps Trak" by Basic Channel by embodying the attributes of a Dub Techno track born in the '90s. Much like the previous track, "Marathon" intertwines industrial sounding chords with intense claps and high hats. Justin further exemplifies his diverse set of production competencies as he steps out of his comfort zone with this fast-paced dub techno record.
The last original production featured on the EP is entitled "Athens". "Athens' diversifies the overall sound of the Marathon EP as it draws inspiration from the previous two tracks as well as incorporating grooves that we often hear in house releases from the DJ/Producer. Furthermore, it perfectly combines the thumping lows heard in "Vale of Tempe" and the Dub chords from "Marathon." In contrast to the prior two, this track slows the tempo down to 132 bpm. "Athens" adds a tasteful touch to the already diverse EP.
Wrapping up the Marathon EP is a remix by Viers of "Vale of Tempe". The UK based producer included his own spin on the High-energy Dub Techno track. He slowed the track to a still upbeat 135 bpm and included a break-beat approach to the chords while still maintain the overall integrity of the original.
Previously, Justin Jay was known for his easy-going and unique house hits as well as his psychedelic funk projects. With the release of the 'Marathon' EP, the West coast DJ and Producer displays the versatility of the artist and can easily step out of his comfort zone to jump headfirst in the world of Techno.
