Checkmate Entertainment signee B.Eveready delivers his new EP Throwback Theatre that broods on a handful of topics ranging from music, culture to politics and power. The Boston-bred, Baltimore-based rapper aims to give the listener a snapshot of his thoughts and perspective on wax with this short and somewhat hard-hitting project full of poetic storytelling lyriscism. The 5-track body of work is handled by B.Eveready himself with just one collaborator in the form of fellow emcee Scholarman.
Throwback Theatre opens up on a heavy note with the brass-driven intro "A.C.S.D Intro." B.Eveready goes for the kill shot with bravado bars while describing a world filled with anger. He follows up with the anthemic cut "Undeniable" that focuses on black excellence and his own musical journey. He makes a masterful use of the cinematic beat and even lets the pace of the track breathe on the chorus as he packs the verses with lines like "…So mistakenly, you focus on the fakery/ check where the pen game and hard work is taking me…"
For the most part, the EP is heavy with soul samples and gritty beats that hark back to the golden era of hip-hop mixed with modern-day trap elements. The only slightly standout song is the final track "U Already" that uses a semi trap drum pattern with sped-up vocal samples. B.Eveready steadily walks the line of an urban griot that deserves your attention and doesn't mind delivering that good old dusty hip-hop.
