Psychedelic dream-pop outfit Holy Wave has just released a gorgeous new anthem of progress and growth, "I'm Not Living in the Past Anymore." The bold track is their first of 2020 and comes ahead of their upcoming LP Interloper slated for release on May 8, 2020. The first taste of music in a while, the woozy bop brings optimism and sonic progress. The matching visual that accompanies the song is quite fitting as well, showing the group contently jamming through a distorted, trippy lens.
"I'm Not Living in the Past Anymore" has a beautifully dense and colorful instrumental that features multiple fluctuating levels of provocative synths. The most noticeable is the consistent low registered voice that steadily trickles along throughout the track. It sets an effective ambitious pace for the song and is a nice point of reference before the other vibrant layers come in. As the song progresses, Holy Wave continually add more and more stunning synth parts, climaxing at the outro, which feels like a whirlwind of euphoric sonic textures. The echoing and angelic vocals accent the instrumental nicely, tapping in occasionally while still allowing the backdrop to develop. When the vocals are in, often repeating the track's title, they blend well. They fit the dreamy, psychedelic hue and refrain from cutting through too heavily.
If this is what Holy Wave has been working on since their last release two years ago, the wait was well worth it. The new effort is bright and shimmering, a proud and realized statement of creative ambition. Make sure to check out their new record, out on May 8.
