Canadian rap duo Dragon Fli Empire pays homage to the legendary Flava Unit and Juice Crew in their video for “Fli Beat Patrol,” a funk-laced, Djar One-produced banger lifted from their new Record Store single. Lead emcee Teekay takes on the role of the historian on this funky joint as he runs through the names of the various architects of hip-hop while his musical partner turntablist/producer DJ Cosm, solidifies the notion with some excellent scratches on the chorus. Their sentiment goes beyond the aforementioned legendary rap crews as well, because the track actually takes the listener through the culture’s roots in funk and soul.
The DJ Cosm directed video shows love to those same roots and splices numerous images of their predecessors using retro visual effects reminiscent of the 90s rap videos. The visual is an entirely DIY effort with DJ Cosm behind the camera while Teekay handled editing duties.
“Fli Beat Patrol” appears as the B-side on the duo’s Record Store single, which contains the J-Live featured title-track on the A-side. Get the single on vinyl here and all DSPs here
