In times of tragedy, one of our most universal tendencies is to seek solace in community. The inherently cooperative nature of music makes it an ideal forum for artists to process their grief as they attempt to forge ahead in life. The London-based collective 404 dealt with this feeling head-on this past year when they lost vocalist and founding member Mina “Silvertongue” Topley-Bird in May. The group was shaken to its core but has since begun putting the pieces back together to move ahead as a musical unit. In their first release since the passing of Silvertongue, 404 pays tribute to their late collaborator with her song “Blind Spot,” which she recorded not long before passing.
The track is a moving tribute that showcases Silvertongue’s clever songwriting and captivating vocals. It is the second track off of a forthcoming project entitled Guild Two: Forever, which is set for release on October 18 via Dirty Hit. With instrumentation and production from fellow members Sonny, Bathwater, and Eliot, and live drums from Morgan Simpson of black midi, “Blind Spot” deftly ventures through various grooves while being held together by Silvertongue’s gliding vocals. The single is a powerful testament to Silvertongue’s talents that exhibits the strength of music to heal emotional wounds as 404 looks ahead to the future.
