GoGo Penguin may have a traditional instrumentation for a piano trio, but the group’s music has always reached beyond the confines of expectation. The Manchester triumvirate of pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner has established a reputation of producing groovy, jazz-tinged music with an astounding level of creative vitality. Recently, GoGo Penguin has been touring the world performing a live soundtrack for Godfrey Reggio’s 1982 cult documentary Koyaanisqatsi, and now the group has announced a forthcoming EP Ocean in a Drop: Music for Film that draws inspiration from the performances. In preparation for the EP, which is set for release on October 4 via Blue Note Records, they have released the project’s first single “Time-Lapse City.”
The new single shows proof why the live soundtrack has been such an international hit as it showcases the band’s fiery energy, stellar musicianship, and emotive writing. Turner’s crackling drums and Blacka’s punchy bass notes provide a powerful foundation for Illingworth’s rhythmic piano chords and soaring melodies. As with the rest of the tracks on the upcoming EP, “Time-Lapse City” was recorded live with no layering or overdubs, showcasing the trio’s electrifying synergy. GoGo Penguin has released tons of remarkable music thus far, yet this newfound cinematic quality adds exciting new layers to their sound. The single should get fans of captivating instrumental music, as well as those of Reggio’s doc, excited for the upcoming EP.
