When indie-pop singer UPSAHL first hit the ground running in 2018 with her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now", she promptly set the tone for her infectious hooks and witty deliveries. With the March release of her debut EP, Hindsight 20/20, she only further fortified her position as an indie-pop treasure, leading to an upcoming appearance at Lollapalooza, as well as performances alongside Shallou, Young The Giant, and Tessa Violet. Before all of that kicks off this upcoming weekend, though, she decided to grace us once more with a new fiery single, "Wish You'd Make Me Cry".
Gritty and loud, "Wish You'd Make Me Cry" is a commanding mid-tempo track that harnesses UPSAHL's frustrations, only to let them out in hard-hitting drum kicks and unforgiving lines. “‘Wish You’d Make Me Cry’ is about being with someone who is so good to you that it almost seems fake," she explains. "When I wrote this song with Pete Nappi, I was caught up in that feeling, so I started just venting to him about it. At one point, I think I said something along the lines of ‘I just wish that he would make me cry’. We wrote the song within an hour after that.”
While the production emulates all the anger and exasperation through its punchy synths and unrelenting bass-lines, UPSAHL keeps her cool with her restrained vocals. The sweet and sour contrast works to elevate this song from a simple venting session to an absolute summer treasure.
