Oh, Rose's single "25, Alive" is a powerful look at loss

Hailing from Olympia, Washington, Oh, Rose’s newest single, “25, Alive” is a compelling song exploring the emotions of loss. Clocking in at under three minutes, no time is wasted. After the gritty opening guitar riff, the song drops into a groove and Rose’s haunting vocals take center stage. It’s at once dark, tender, and heavy in a way reminiscent of Big Thief.

“25, Alive” is an especially vulnerable song written by Olivia Rose following the loss of her mother. Rose sings, “I don’t want to feel anger anymore.” The haunting refrain emphasizes the struggle of grief culminating in explosive yet cathartic moments of screaming vocals

Rose says, “This song is so hard for me to play. “25, Alive” was the only song on the album I wrote after my mother passed. I will never forget when it was finished, when I took my hand off the fret and my middle finger locked into my palm and I thought I was so fucked. Like, physically, emotionally fucked up. Like I would never play again.”

We can be grateful she had the courage to continue. The song expresses a yearning for hope. Rose sings, “I want to feel that I can move forward.” And we want that too. Yet Rose is blunt. Instead of offering false platitudes, she tells us, “all I’m seeing is red and I can’t help but be mad at it.”

The accompanying music video (filmed in their hometown bowling alley) alternates between nostalgia and hope. Cutting between darker shots and playful moments of the band, you can feel the sense of family the group has built together.

Their upcoming album, While My Father Sleeps will be available August 23 via Park The Van Records.
