We can all benefit from scaling back on life’s excesses now and then, whether that means taking a break from screens, going on a cleanse, or just getting in touch with nature. Rhye has made a move toward minimalism with a new piano project entitled Spirit, which is due to come out May 10. The first offering from the new release has arrived with the gently soulful single “Needed.”

Rhye has had an evolving cast over the years, and the new track finds frontman Mike Milosh teaming up with former Semisonic band member and Adele collaborator Dan Wilson. The two join forces for a tastefully delicate track about deriving purpose from being needed by a partner. At the forefront of the mix are Milosh’s signature radiant, lofty vocals, which are set against a warm stew of sparse piano chords, guitars, and tender synths. With the combination of soft, swirling instrumentals and striking vocals on “Needed,” the stripped-down new record is bound to be a fascinating new entry to the Rhye catalogue.

Spirit contains eight songs and features additional collaborations with Ólafur Arnalds and Thomas Bartlett. Pre-order the project on vinyl here.
