ESCHES is Robert Summerfield, a Vienna-based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist with roots from across the upper peninsula of Michigan and the greater Chicago area. Known for painting a dreamy restlessness in his songs, ESCHES is a harbinger of unique tumultuous emotions, unwavering in his artistry over minimal sonic textures. Indeed, his latest album Sierra, outlines a narrative of human vulnerability that is only further amplified by title track "Sierra"'s haunting visuals.
A black and white cinematic cut that is both minimal yet exquisitely detailed, "Sierra" exhibits an artful exposition of loss and yearning through the two characters as they flit across scenes of home. The mellow R&B vocals often but not in constant falsetto are paired with a soft yet commanding percussion, which glides across the scenes with effortless ease—leaving everything in an open slate for the two to come together. It's a careful approach towards honesty and self, complemented by the quick and languid movements of the two on screen—as though showcasing what it means to be human in an abstract manner. ESCHES clearly has defined to us what his art is and as well, has given us agency to really reflect on the message of "Sierra".
