Young dubstep lord Ray Volpe is an EARMILK favorite for consistently pushing the boundaries of the genre of bass music. Today Ray presents his debut EP on SKisM's Never Say Die Records, Purpose, and we are honored to premiere the brain-rattling title track.
When "Purpose" first landed in my obit, I have to admit I rewound and marveled at its surprise drop about six times before demanding that I premiere the track. I'd lost some interest in bass music recently, finding many of the offerings crossing my horizon to be utterly uninspired and formulaic. But I knew when new heat from Ray and NSD was on the way, he would flip the script. Out the gate swiftly with Armanni Reign on the assist with a furious flow, snarling "light fires / this here just feels right / higher up amongst the clouds where we hid our dreams / and if I must protect em I will fight," you know "Purpose" is poised to be a raucous ride.
But nothing, and I mean NOTHING could have prepared me for what was to come around 1:45. The energy increases manically, and suddenly the image of those cybergoths raving under an underpass filled my brain. Is this… PSYTRANCE?! Yes folks, he's done the unthinkable. Sitting pretty at 150 throughout, Ray turns your brain to scrambled eggs, and calmly returns to dubstep business as usual as the track careens to a close.
