The soul-pop vocalist Benny Sings has released a new video for his single “Not Enough.” The audio for the bubbly track originally arrived last month as the first single off of the Dutch artist’s upcoming album City Pop, due out February 22 on Stones Throw.
The Bear Damon-directed video aptly matches the funky track that Benny co-wrote with Mayer Hawthorne. The song’s rubbery bass lines, punchy piano chords, and smooth vocals are set to visuals of a dancing body-builder, a woman shooting lightning out of her fingers, and various other characters dancing and lip-synching to Benny’s vocals. Even though it’s a playful feast for the eyes that clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, there is an undercurrent of emotional resonance that reflects the lyrics about a scorned person refusing to take back a former partner. In the hooks, Benny sings, “It’s not enough, don’t fight back / you can’t call me out and then make amends / it’s not enough, understand / you can’t break my dreams and just bring ‘em back.” With the blend of strong musicianship, entertaining visuals, and a tinge of yacht rock, “Not Enough” shows that Benny Sings’ forthcoming album will be a fun and unapologetically original affair.
