Former PHOX lead singer Monica Martin has begun sharing her latest solo project and the next chapter of her creative exploration with the release of a live studio video for her stunning new single "Cruel".
A lionhearted songwriter armed with a soulful brassy voice, Martin is both evocative and sinfully infectious to listen to. But when her earlier group PHOX went on indefinite hiatus in 2017, Martin decided to move to LA because “Wisconsin is cold as f*ck”. Well, whatever the reason, that California sun has really helped bring out some new avenues of production and recording work further celebrating Martin's continually evolving artisanship. Compared to past projects, "Cruel" contains a silky, lush R&B texture to it that speaks to the soul. Produced by notable British producer Eg White (Adele, Florence & The Machine, Sam Smith), Martin delivers each bar with pure conviction and earnest emotion.
With an EP slated for release in 2019 via Republic Records, this latest single is just a small taste of what's to come from a singer-songwriter that's boldly stepping out of her familiarity to deliver some exciting new music.
