ICYMI: Toro y Moi is extraordinary on "Ordinary Pleasure"

Toro y Moi seems poised to drop one of the funkiest albums of 2019. After last year's semi-sullen breakup record, Boo Boo, Chaz & Co. are ready for what I hesitate to call a "return to form." It's really not – but Toro is definitely exploring exciting new territory. "Ordinary Pleasure" is the latest dance-pop banger from the prolific songwriter who has proven himself at the top of his game. Toro's seventh album, Outer Peace, is a welcomed lean to house-oriented dance with an array of oddball expressions and textures.

Tribal bongos mixed with space-aged delay sounds give way to a liquified bouncing bass. If this pleasure is ordinary, I must be incredibly boring. Bundick's doubled vocals are cool and carefree given the fact this is the second consecutive single where he addresses his mortality,

Does sex even sell anymore?

I feel like I've seen it all

Or maybe I'm just old

Or maybe I'm just bored

There's an underlying theme with both "Ordinary Pleasure" and lead single "Freelance" that embraces a sense of "norm-core" and feeling comfortable in the mundane. Even the album title hints at finding a sense of ease in a world run by hype and clout. The chorus of this track is undeniably enjoyable regardless of the meaning. Slinky analog synths bop back and forth building up to a beautiful conclusion.

Toro y Moi's seventh full-length, Outer Peace, is due January 18th, 2019 on Carpark Records.
