Bay Area producer Cal-A has, over the past few years, proved himself to be one of Northern California's finest. With beats on nearly every major project coming out of the area, Cal-A is finally ready to place himself in the spotlight. His debut album Fake Pop just dropped with features from a variety of Bay Area mainstays, namely acts like Nef The Pharaoh, P-Lo, and Marc E. Bassy. Fake Pop is exactly what the name suggests: it's a project that shares influence from the radio's pop music but uses the liveliness of the Bay Area to sound less manufactured. It doesn't feel like Cal-A is trying to make radio hits or mimic anything we've heard before, but it does sound like he is making music to appeal to a huge audience.
One of the Bay Area's best-kept secrets, YMTK, begins the project with one of its most irresistible tracks "The Light (feat. YMTK)." It then quickly segways into the most catchy, bounce-driven song on the project in "We On It (feat. P-Lo, Rexx Life Raj & Nef The Pharaoh)." As Fake Pop goes on, it takes aspects of R&B and twists them into a brand of light pop that only Cal-A can put together.
