How To Dress Well has released his last full-length album in 2016; compared to the rest of his repertoire, the album Care was unusually pop-influenced. Still, it remained congruous with his other releases through the continued central focus on his soft story-telling falsetto. With Monday's announcement of his next album (to be titled The Anteroom), HTDW shared the first track on the project, "Nonkilling 6 | Hunger." It's clear he is steering The Anteroom in a sonic direction closer to the sound of his DJ sets than to the singer-songwriter feel of Care. The contrast between his cerebral lyrics and feathery voice and the simplistic layering beat sets an unexpectedly alluring tone for the album to come.
Beginning with a seizure-warning, the music video for "Nonkilling 6 | Hunger" is similar to the song itself. There is stark contrast between soft vulnerable imagery of Krell and brutal flashing light and distorting effects. The video begins with a short spoken intro and quickly unravels into a layered and heavy house bassline. Director Justin Daashuur Hopkins, a member of NOH/WAVE collective, is Krell's collaborator on the project. His new album, The Anteroom,is scheduled to drop on October 19th via the British independent label Domino Records— keep an eye out for more How To Dress Well in the coming weeks.
