daste is the product of sheer spontaneity from the minds of three Australian session musicians, Callum MacDonald, Braxton Tahi, and Tyler Harden. Their debut single, “Thinking Of,” was born after the trio hit it off during a show on the Gold Coast.
Callum MacDonald had this to say of the band’s inception:
“The three of us found an instant connection in our first session, understanding the strengths we had as a group and our common work process of attention to detail, we knew we’d created something special.”
“Thinking Of” stutters in with pulsing keyboards, subdued vocals, and glitchy drum beats almost symbolic of the group freshness. The track settles into a magnetic groove sprinkled with wavy analog synths that come and go, providing the listener with endless sonic delicacies to trance with. Playing out like a study in the art of seduction, the lyrics are dappled with laissez-faire lines of missed calls and emotional procrastination.
Following in the footsteps of Toro y Moi and early King Krule, daste has the potential to become one of the more noteworthy lo-fi/chillwave acts to emerge from the Gold Coast.
“Thinking Of” will be available everywhere August 17th via Mammal Sounds Records.
