In terms of hustle anthems, it's easy to get caught up in tropes, but rapper Parris LaVon keeps it fresh with his new single, "Better Off." Originally from Waldorf, Maryland, LaVon moved to New York for school and a better position to make his rap dreams come true. You can hear it in his cadence, but LaVon cites J. Cole, Curren$y, and Fat Trel as his present influences. In an effort to keep true to his influences and stay relevant in the game, he describes his music as “the bridge between lyrical hip hop and what’s popular now.”
With the Vegxs-producer "Better Off," LaVon accomplishes just that. Over a bed of skittering keys, LaVon slips into his lyrical pocket, spitting bars about his financial woes and his hunger for hip-hop never fading. His delivery is punchy and precise, with a little charisma bleeding through the more aching sections of the track. We get a good sense of LaVon's personality as he picks up the pace and teases a double-time flow. Along with his technical skill, we also find LaVon to be an apt storyteller, as he uses "Better Off" to guide listeners through the dark moments in his life before we emerge triumphant by the end of the tune.
