The aptly named Lady Powers | Power Ladies Remix EP, out now via Island Australia/Capitol USA, is a stellar collection of remixes by an ultra talented group of female electronic music producers. Australian singer/songwriter Vera Blue's "Lady Powers." is all about female empowerment, and each of the selected remix artists imparts her own electronic finesse to the alternative original. Vera Blue says about the EP, "I really love all the remixes because all the girls, they’re all women and they’re all producers, and I think that’s something that really should be recognised in our industry."
The EP opens with TOKiMONSTA's cerebral effort and flows into Maya Jane Coles' drip drop deep house baseline, both artists requiring no introduction for fans of electronic music. Things get more interesting with the lesser known artists that follow. Alice Ivy, Vera's fellow Aussie countrywoman, teases with a progressive sound before a future bass style bridge takes you into the sunny heart of her remix. Finally, Maria Marcus, the undercover studio whiz from Stockholm and Palma de Mallorca that produced 3 tracks on an album which sold over one million units, provides the standout effort to close out the EP. The track builds tension before a less-is-more drop provides an under stated dose of dance floor momentum. Though each track is perfectly capable of standing alone, this collection of remixes was intended to make a statement and does so in an eminently listenable way.
