J. Cole gave us fair warning before dropping his 5th project last Friday, causing his fans to quickly go into a frenzy and his non-fans to continually stare from the bleachers.  The project which he titled KOD is a 12 track body of work that continues J.Cole's socially conscious narrative. The days of "Can't get it enough" and "Work out" are long gone and done with. Mr. Cole has found his sound and ultimately knows what he can achieve with his voice at this level of fame. Musically we are tempted to compare KOD to 4 Your Eyez Only but these are two separate projects and we will admit that we are leaning towards the former just so you know.

KOD's theme is all about the coping mechanism. He talks about addiction from different perspectives, be it drugs, love, depression and more over the course of 12 tracks. Musically, the sound is solid and while much of it is trap influenced, it doesn't drown out the message..The project is also layered with an anti-drug motif and a very reflective spoken word like piece from an unknown female character (think intro of ATliens). The stand out tracks for us include the title track, "Photograph","Kevin’s Heart", "BRACKETS", "1985 (Intro to “The Fall Off”)". A video for “ATM”, directed by Cole along with Scott Lazer was also released to support the album. The vivid visual is quirky and displays Cole as different characters who are spurned on by money.
