The Australian rap scene is flourishing. Coming out of Sydney’s South-Western suburbs, local emcee B Wise is playing a major role in growing and legitimizing the Aussie rap scene. Alongside acts like Manu Crooks and Nicole Millar, Wise is helping ensure that Australia get its dues as a hotbed of musical talent. In 2016, the rapper toured with Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, and ScHoolboy Q, and dropped off his debut EP, Semi-Pro. With this many co-signs, we can expect the music to be excellent, and with his latest single, "The Key," B Wise still blows expectations out of the water.
"The Key" opens on a bright, warbling, and soulful note. Horns and a backing choir pad frame up Wise's lively and breezy flow. Structured like a classic feel-good anthem, "The Key" dodges all contrived elements of happy-rap and allows Wise's charisma to drive the music. The single is a declaration of love and a distillation of joy, and exactly what we need to get through these last few weeks of winter.
Of the track, B Wise says: "'The Key ' is about our basic need to crave love, human touch, and admiration. It can often be taken for granted, and when it's gone, it's easy to feel lost and isolated."
