If you’ve been keeping an eye on the Bay Area hip hop scene over the past couple years, Rexx Life Raj is a name you probably recognize. The burgeoning Berkeley spitter and former D-1 offensive lineman, who can lace a silky hook and deliver a swanky 16 on the same track, just dropped a trippy video for "Not My Friend," a standout joint off his recent Father Figure 2: Flourish project.
"Not My Friend" provides us with the same beautifully chilled-out vibes we’ve come to expect from Sir Rexx. The low-key instrumental — produced by a talented consortium of Mr. Carmack, Mikos Da Gawd, Ian McKee, Wax Roof, and Cisco Cortez — sets the table for Raj to get his eat on, crooning and spitting bars around a relatable topic: those "friends" who only seem to come around when the gettin’ is good. Director David Dutton does a superb job of illustrating this fickleness by constantly shuffling swimsuit-clad honeys and entourage in and out of the frame. Overall, the track and video are superb and signal what’s sure to be another momentous year for the East Bay sensation.
