The latest full-length auditory triumph to grace NPR First Listen is from none other than Cut Copy. The iconic Aussie synth pop quartet is one of dance music's most enduring acts, as demonstrated by the ever-evolving tone of their work. Haiku From Zero (out September 22), the follow up to 2013's acid housey Free Your Mind, is a decidedly tropical experience, hallmarked by experimental and world beats, lush textures, and surf rock sensibilities. Cut Copy never cease to impress me with their ability to be 100% both a live band and an electronic act. There are no sacrifices being made in either realm on this release.
In conjunction with the stream (available until September 21), Cut Copy have unveiled the beachy "Black Rainbows" on all digital platforms. If the Beach Boys had access to synthesizers, I'd like to believe this is the kind of music they would have made. It's cheerful and palatable, while still retaining depth and rich musicality.
