Boston rock quartet The Max Tribe release their new album Retrofit exclusively with EARMILK today.

To retrofit is take something old, something used and revitalize it with the addition of modern parts – a fitting reference for a band whose classic rock influences are easily heard, but melded into a smoldering blend of modern psych-blues with a touch of soul. Retrofit was recorded at 1867 Studios in Boston, a massive building that once served as a Masonic Temple but now houses the collection of vintage recording equipment that lent itself well to The Max Tribe’s philosophy of respecting vintage methods of recording, but ultimately reinterpreting them.

"These songs transpired through strife, love, heartbreak, and mystery… conditions we all relate to. The sound of the record cultivated from old techniques with a retrofit approach. We sought out to take vintage sounds and modernize them. The theme or concept of the record is revealed most in the production. We recorded most of the album in an old Masonic Temple built in 1867. This is where the album ultimately got its color and conviction."

The Tribe was born in 2013 when vocalist and Nashville native Austin Max united with drummer Conner Kessler at music school in Boston. For over a year they developed a psych sound playing around New England, their debut single “Tape Machine” featured on Sound of Boston as one of the top 5 releases of 2015. Max and Kessler linked up with keyboard player Noah Lubert  and bass player Rafael Minerbo in 2016, completing the intertwined charisma that became the group's signature psych sound.
