If Lunice is a name that you think you know, but can't place it, you're probably not alone. The producer has been silent for a few years, after breaking out with EPs Stacker Upper and One Hunned in the early 2010's, and picking up speed in his supergroup collaboration TNIGHT with revered contemporary Hudson Mohawke in 2012-13. Since then, Lunice has been relatively silent. But this month, the Quebec artist is back with some new solo material, and frankly, it reminds us of the first time we were exposed to this type of music.
Lunice is a master of pairing hip hop and electronica for energetic, yet laidback music just waiting for you to dance to. The style that has evolved since its inception and is now a commonplace should welcome one of its veterans back, as Lunice's "Mazerati" shows us the best of the best. Dark and instrumental at its best, "Mazerati" was produced in Lunice's at-home studio alongside engineer S-Type and is released via LuckyMe Records.
We can only hope that Lunice will follow with more originals after this – and signs are good for that as he prepares to debut his new live show at Barcelona's Sonar nightclub on June 16th.
