Today Dave East, G Herbo and Don Q have given us a little treat: a straight bars record with no chorus. Aptly titled “No Hook”, Dave, G, and Q spit back and forth about their respective hustles and what it took to get to where they are today.

You can blame it on the weather, but it always seems that East Coast rappers make music that feels and sounds colder than their West Coast counterparts. Even though G Herbo is from Chicago, I would certainly group him in with the East Coasters. And, No surprises here, “No Hook” is a perfect example of just that type of icy music.
Clocking in at just under 3 minutes, the chilling piano and flute ladened beat feels right at home in the winter season. At the 2 minute mark however, things really heat up when the rappers quicken their pace and start going back and forth with one another after a few bars each.
“No Hook” is a prime example of perfect musical cohesion. Each one of these guys does their thing on the mic but never tries to steal the shine from anyone else. That’s not to say they don’t bring their A-game, but rather that nobody is grandstanding. What we are left with as listeners, is an exciting track that makes us hunger for more collaborations from the three rhymers in the future.
Dave East had a fantastic 2016 with the release of his well-lauded Kiari Channel, and he is clearly wasting no time in 2017. No word whether or not he has another project in the works for a ‘17 release, but if he continues to drop quality music like this, I doubt anyone will mind.
