Producer Christian Löffler hails from Greifswald, Germany, a quaint city adjacent to the stirring vistas of the Baltic Sea. There’s an indulgent melancholia in his music that can be traced back to the haunting beauty of that remote landscape, like reverberating echoes of the sea’s vastness on a dreary day.
Löffler has described his style as an attempt to capture that poignancy: “All my music is connected by a gloomy spirit, which is minted by a warm sincerity. I try to merge all kinds of different acoustic colors to obtain this feeling in my music.”
In early November, Hunter/Game’s new imprint Just This announced that their sixth release would be Löffler’s Lost EP. The German producer’s debut with the Milanese label won’t officially arrive until December 11, but today you can hear a premiere of its title track here on EARMILK.
The song opens with a tremulous pad, slowly incorporating industrial, witch house-esque clicks that veer down ghostly paths. By the time the beat drops, we’re well primed for dark basement dance. Melodic synth lines and a mercurial buzz help expand textures as Löffler morphs clicks and shakers into supplemental beats. He manipulates his pieces with a great sense of pace and an even better command of suspense – not unlike the uber-talented Jon Hopkins.
The EP includes exclusive remixes by Lake People and Nuno Dos Santos. Lost will be available digitally next Friday and on vinyl sometime in February.
