There are some artists that should be left well alone. We've all seen the X Factor auditions with voice after voice desperately trying to nail records from the likes of Beyonce and Whitney Houston, it leaves a lot to be desired. UK based duo Maribou State have always had that similar 'leave them alone' pretense, which is proved by the lack of remixes of their tracks. Their productions are so intricately woven together that most artists wouldn't have the courage to rearrange a single piano key, let alone construct an entire remix. Enter US born, and now Germany based, Lane 8 for this brave and beautiful remix.
The atmosphere is instantly rich and poignant, with tense synth keys complimenting the stunning vocal sample from the original. The gradual crescendo drum roll portrays the "Wallflower" coming out of their shell, intoxicated for the first time and enjoying it as the innocent vocal succumbs to a dark, pulsing bass line. Conscience comes into play as the vocal resurfaces only to be fought off again by bullish growls as inhibitions are lost beneath towering bird-like cackles. Although Lane 8 paints the remix with a more sinister brush, the emotion of the original is still very much intact.
Maribou State fans may have approached this with some skepticism. However, Lane 8 has undoubtedly proven that even masterpieces can be reworked. Out on Anjunadeep from the 4th September.
