On the heels of his PRIDE EP, singer-songwriter TOTEM transfers his talent from LA to NYC and gives us a multi-faceted ballad of a comeback track.
“Unrequited” starts off slowly and softly as all innocent crushes do, a somber lullaby recounting a one-sided love story. It stays this way until 2:40 where TOTEM’s emotive vocal brews, synth bubbles up to the surface, and a hammock of buzzy bass supports the swaying track.
Of the song, TOTEM says, “The greatest and the worst thing about falling in love in a big city is that there are options everywhere. So any time we do find someone, there's always a temptation to go off in search of something that might be 'better.' Of course, most times, it's not better. You end up feeling selfish, or worse yet, like you made a terrible mistake. The allure of the chase is powerful…but often destructive.”
He could just as well be talking about Facebook depression and online perceptions: people posting their happiest moments, and the frighteningly quick adoption of the acronymic hashtag #fomo. One thing you won’t be thinking about while listening to this track, is what others are doing – because its transcending nature and emotional transportation will be distraction enough.
