I have to admit it: I did not cover the second or third track off of Tom Misch's forthcoming Beat Tape 2. However, today I plan to totally redeem myself and bring you numero cuatro. Trust me, this one is straight cream-of-the-crop. The package comes with accompaniment by South London MC Loyle Carner, whose low-level energy is the perfect complement to Misch's delicate instrumental.
Tom is not only a genius on the keyboard, he's done very well establishing a loyal fanbase since the release of Beat Tape 1. This is all evidenced by his most recent Hype Machine topping singles Sunshine and In The Midst Of It All, which have found him an eclectic array of supporters – from one of YouTube’s biggest dance music channels, Majestic Casual, to the likes of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Huw Stephens and Clara Amfo on BBC Radio 1. Features on the new album include Jordan Rakei (who will also be featured on the new Disclosure album), Carmody, Sam Wills, and of course now Loyle. This is shaping up to be quite an anticipated, supported project.
Beat Tape 2 follows a string of well-received releases since its predecessor Beat Tape 1, including his Out To Sea EP with Carmody, a white label release on hip-hop label Soulection, collaborations with the likes of Bearcubs and reworks of Mos Def and Busta Rhymes. I've been an avid listener for a while, so you can understand how excited I actually am for a new full length release.
