A crate dig through Beatport can really uncover some hidden gems. This week, the gem is from Dutch producer NSFW, and his latest release on Nurvous Records.
A few pages down in the featured house release section, In My Life / Telling Me Lies is a house music gem that capitalizes on the almost oversaturated current trend in the dance music space of sampling R&B vocals and turning them into nu disco hits, but approaches it in a new way that totally reinvigorates the concept. From what we can tell, NSFW has enlisted help to re-record vocals, with one being from Niche's "You've Been Cheating / Telling Me Lies" and Chanel's 2005 track "My Life." The appeal here is not only the attraction from the melodic affect, but that NSFW hasn't taken the most obvious samples possible to use. Without trying so hard to appeal to our obvious nostalgia, he has succeeded in achieving the same lovely effect.
And that doesn't quite fully paint the whole picture, because the production value on each track is impressive. Each is different but still falls in a deep nu disco category, with special personality shining through.
