Toronto-based producer Wil Diebel, better known as Deebs, turned heads last year with his Songs4UByMe EP, a five-track offering of shadowy, hypnotic rap instrumentals. They were powerful, engaging standalone tracks, yet they (along with his flurry of excellent remixes) hinted at endless possibilities for Deebs in terms of future collaborations. That day has come, with Diebel and Los Angeles-based singer Jarell Perry set to drop the Shift EP, out May 18th via Time No Place.
With this announcement the pair has shared "Relapse," a first look at the duo's finished product. Deebs' music makes one think of rap first and foremost, but its druggy sensuality and tinges of heartbreak make it equally suited for R&B. One could hardly imagine a better vocalist for this sound than Jarell Perry, who matches Diebel's mood and tone with every line. This R&B is a bit weird and uninterested in being catchy, but let's face it, these days that's the best kind isn't it? Be sure to grab the entire Shift EP when it drops in a few weeks, for now stream "Relapse" below.
