Seattle-born and now Vegas-based, DJ Scene's accomplished skills behind the turntables and in the studio have allowed his name to assume an iconic status in the club scene. Scene boasts numerous impressive titles under his belt, including a Red Bull Thre3Style champion, being voted ‘Vegas Best Pool DJ’ twice by JackColton.com, ‘Best Open Format DJ’ by RemixReport.com, and winning the DMC Northwest champion title in 2002. Needless to say, Scene has been around the block and has been doing it an awe-inspiring consistency that most artists can only strive for.
Now, hot off the heels of starting his new Vegas residency at Light Nightclub inside Mandalay Bay Las Vegas, he has recently announced his new Slap It Down EP with Four Color Zack due out on A-Trak's Fools Gold on March 10th, which includes a track with New York rap legends M.O.P. We got a chance to catch up with Scene during his hot start in 2015, where we talked his DJ career, the upcoming EP, and even got a "crazy Vegas story" out of him.
DJ Scene has also recorded an exclusive mix for EARMILK, which, featuring hard-hitting pump-up tracks from the likes of Chuckie, JayCeeOh, Rae Sremmurd and Jack U, will be prime for your upcoming weekend pregames. Go on and delve into his 30-minute mix, and you won't have to suffer through any "what song is this?!" episodes, as you'll be able to check out the tracklisting in its entirety below.
Earmilk: You are quite the legend in the DJ community, and especially known for your ability on the turntables. At what point in your career did you start making production a major focus as well?
DJ Scene: I've always messed around with edits and recorded live mashups but it wasn't till around 2011 that I started becoming interested in creating original music.
EM: What was it like doing official remixes for hip hop legends Naughty by Nature and Black Sheep?
DJS: Very humbling and surreal. These are guys I grew up listening to and love playing in my sets. To have the opportunity to remix their timeless classics, then have them officially released is an honor.
EM: Where did the idea to collaborate with M.O.P. Come from, and how did you make that happen?
DJS: They have that real boom bap, in-your-face, distinct sound that commands a party. As Slap It Down took shape, M.O.P. was immediately who we thought of to get involved. We had to make some calls and ask around but in the end, they were exactly what the record needed.
EM: This won't be your first release with Fools Gold. What do you think makes Fools Gold as a record label so great?
DJS: My first release with Fool's Gold was a collab I did with my man Jayceeoh called "Damn". I'm really feeling Fool's Gold right now for a few reasons. They have a commitment to quality releases and catalog is super diverse. I love that cause that's personally how I try to approach DJing. I also love the fact that the foundation of Fool's Gold is based on real DJing and turntablism. It's a label owned and operated by real DJs.
EM: You and Four Color Zack are both Red Bull Thre3style Champs. When did you decide to start working on music together and what was your production process?
DJS: We met living in Seattle and had DJ'd together over the years, throwing nights, doing 2×4 sets and making bootlegs. Our approach to combining production forces clicked over having a similar party rocking background, knowing what would work to keep a crowd alive. Being in the clubs all the time massively influenced how we produce. You see what works and what doesn't and you head back to the studio that night and try to make what you'll be able to use. It was a natural progression to start working on original joints. Even tho I'm in Vegas now and Zack is in Seattle, we get a lot of stuff done over dropbox.
EM: You've made your name as one of the premiere DJs in Las Vegas as well. What's unique about DJing in Vegas compared to other cities?
DJS: The thing about Vegas is everyone comes from all over the world to go ALL OUT. People want to leave with a great story. I feel like people generally spend more then they would back home and they tend to let loose more as well. Why not right? They're not in their home towns with people they might see all the time… it's complete strangers from all over the world living it up.
EM: Outside of Vegas what is your favorite city to play in?
DJS: I've never had a bad time in San Diego haha Those beaches tho!
EM: Who are your favorite producers right now and who are your favorite turntablists to see live?
DJS: I really like the Jack U album. A-Trak's latest single is sick. Yellow Claw, GTA, TJR, Deorro, Grandtheft, Floss just to name a few. I'll always be a Premier and RZA fan as well. As far as turntablists Four Color Zack, Z-Trip, Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak, Mix Master Mike are always super inspiring to see live.
EM: Give us one crazy story from your years in Vegas…
DJS: Doing a party at Jet inside the Mirage and having Michael Jordan and Leonardo Dicaprio shutting the club down behind the booth til it was about to close. As soon as I'm winding down and about to pack up, a whale walks in from a huge win on the casino floor. Dropped 75k in one hour and had us keep his table club open til they were done around 6.
EM: When you're not making music and DJing what do you like to do in your free time?
DJS: I love spending time with my little boy and my wife. We go to the park and take him to places around Vegas.
EM: What's next for DJ Scene?
DJS: More records!
